Product Teams’ LOVE 🧡 ¯\(ツ)/¯
Drop Away is a pretty interesting game published by Rollic and developed by the experienced team at Brew Games.
Imho, Rollic has had 7 puzzle titles from Q4 2023 up until today, and the timeline looks something like this:
Seat Away (Nov ‘23)
Screw Jam (Dec ‘23)
Crowd Express (Feb ‘24)
Hole People (Feb ‘24)
Color Block Jam (Jun ‘24)
(Yes, I’ve deconstructed that ◕‿◕)
Drop Away (Aug ‘24)
Gecko Out (Jan ‘25)
(+ this one too ◠‿◠)
Quick rundown? 👇
Seat Away, Screw Jam, and Crowd Express weren’t original concepts.
They weren’t first to market. Rollic simply executed on opportunities they believed they could win in an existing ocean, and honestly, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.
Hole People was the first puzzle game built around the hole + fill + stickman trio. The catch was that the holes themselves couldn’t move, meaning the movement factor simply didn’t exist in that puzzle.
Then came Color Block Jam, which was a huge turning point for Rollic and, unless I’m mistaken, their first mega hit centered around movement mechanics since Seat Away.
And just two months later, Drop Away arrived 🙂
Now let’s look at the timeline…
In February 2024, Rollic experimented with the hole + fill + stickman trio.
Then they created a mega hit that put movement at the center of the gameplay experience. (Well.. technically they hadn’t proven it yet, because Color Block Jam spent almost a year optimizing its CPI before becoming what it is today.)
And then, just two months later, movement + hole + fill + stickman came together into a single formula...
...and Drop Away was born.
If you’re wondering whether Drop Away is a massive success...
I’d say NOT really.
AppMagic data shows that downloads have now stabilized at roughly 300K per month, although IAP revenue is still sitting $1M+ monthly, which is honestly pretty impressive.
Within its own subgenre, Drop Away currently sits at the top, followed closely by South Korean studio Actionfit's "Drop the Cat", which is basically "Drop Away but with cats." 😼
I don’t think this needs a much longer discussion.
The only thing I’d add is this:
Drop Away is definitely NOT a game built around the “Move First. Solve While Moving.” level design philosophy.
Instead, you can feel Color Block Jam’s level design DNA all over it. The inspiration is simply too obvious to ignore. 👀
